RAM (Random Access Memory) along with the motherboard, processor, graphics card and hard drive type are the essential hardware factors in computers.
When choosing a computer, people usually focus on the quantity RAM offered. The more RAM you have, the more things your computer can do at once. But what about RAM frequency (speed)? Here’s more about it.
How to Check RAM Frequency on Windows
To check RAM frequency on Windows devices, you can use Task Manager or Command Prompt. Both work identically regardless of the version of Windows.
Check RAM Frequency with Task Manager
There are multiple ways to start Task Manager.
- The easiest is to right click anywhere on the taskbar and select task management from the menu that appears. Alternatively, you can use the Windows + X command to open this menu.
- Alternatively, you can use the Ctrl + Alt + Delete order. Either opens the menu that allows you to lock your computer, switch users, and so on. On the list you will also see the task management choice. Click on it to open Task Manager.
- When you launch Task Manager, navigate to the Performance tab. In the list on the left, you will see various entries such as CPU, Memory, Disk 0, Wi-Fi, GPU, and so on. Select Memory. It should be the second entry on the list.
- Then, in the Memory window that appears on the right side of the Task Manager screen, you will see the Speed entry. This number indicates the speed (frequency) of your RAM module.
The keyboard shortcut that takes you straight to the Task Manager is the lesser known one Ctrl + Shift + Esc order.
Checking the RAM Frequency Using Command Prompt
Like the Task Manager, you can access the Command Prompt in a few ways.
- Right click on the Start menu or use the Win + X order. However, in some Windows versions, you will not find the Command Prompt this way. The alternative PowerShell option exists, but you cannot use the same commands to find your RAM frequency.
- So another way to run command prompt is to left click Get startedseeking Command Promptand hit Enter. That should do it. You can also press Windows + R on the keyboard to select the . to open Run function, type in cmdand hit Enter.
- Once the Command Prompt opens, use the following command to learn more about your RAM frequency: wmic MEMORYCHIP gets BankLabel, Capacity, DeviceLocator, MemoryType, TypeDetail, Speed.
- Alternatively, you can use the wmic memory chip list full order. Note that this command also works in PowerShell.
How to Check RAM Frequency on macOS
There are also two ways to check RAM frequency on Apple computers. It’s all pretty simple, like most things on macOS computers.
Check the RAM frequency with About This Mac
The easiest way to check your computer’s RAM frequency is through the About this Mac menu.
- To display this menu, click the Apple logo in the top left corner of your screen.
- Search and select in this menu About this Mac.
- In the menu that appears, you will see five tabs: Overview, Displays, Storage, Support and Service. Select the Overview tab.
- You will see a list of the major hardware components for your computer. below Memory, you will see all the specifications of your RAM. For example, 8GB 1600Mhz DDR3.
Check RAM Frequency with Utility
An alternative method of seeing your RAM frequency is the Utility menu.
- Go to the Applications folder and select Utilities.
- Navigate in this menu to System information.
- On the left, you will see a list of information, including hardware, network, software, etc.
- Fold the . from Hardware option and find and select the Memory entry. When you select it, you will see information on the right side of the window. This information includes the RAM frequency in MHz.
Checking Your RAM Frequency
While RAM frequency doesn’t play an essential role in how well your computer performs, it does matter, at least to a degree. Knowing what type of DDR you have and what frequency your module is running at can be useful to know, at least for motherboard compatibility reasons.
