Why You Can’t Stream ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ or ‘Elvis’ Just Yet

Earlier this year, Warner Bros. Discovery’s “The Batman,” the latest cinematic rendition of the Caped Crusader, is out in theaters on HBO Max 45 days after its opening. At the time, this move actually read a bit like an act of restraint on the part of the streaming service.

After covid vaccines became available last year, people slowly started returning to movie theaters, but it wasn’t until the fall that the box office started showing signs of life. (WBD) devised a strategy to release movies like “The Suicide Squad” and “Dune” simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max, as a way to increase the subscriber base for the streaming service.
