Southwest Airlines Takes a Step Toward Solving a Huge Problem

The pandemic created a perfect storm of trouble for the airline industry.

Air traffic basically came to a standstill because nobody had to go anywhere. Schedules were shortened and the flights that actually took off flew far less than full.

The problem put the industry in self-preservation mode. Most airlines have gotten billions in federal aid while figuring out how to cut costs without violating the terms of those bailouts.

That, in turn, presented many challenges for Southwest Airlines (LUV) , a company that had never laid off staff in its 50 years of existence. Due to the pandemic, the workforce has been excessive, but the airline’s leadership has shown it understands that replacing employees is not an easy procedure.
