The Secretariat of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Nonwa Ue-dume, Tai Local Government Area, Rivers State, was vandalized Monday by suspected thugs ahead of the unveiling by Senator Magnus Abe, the party’s candidate for governor.

Local SDP believers overseeing final preparations for a tumultuous welcome for candidate Abe woke up Monday morning to encounter destruction over the decorated party secretary along with the podium, chairs and tables for the event.

Abe spokesman Parry Benson, reflecting on the incident, quoted the guber candidate as saying: “The various attacks and threats to life and property will not deter him from campaigning in Tai and other local government areas of the state. “

Benson’s statement called on the Police Commissioner, Rivers Command, CP Okon Effiong and other security forces to investigate the incident and end the escalating violence in the state.

While the party blamed Monday’s incident that capped off the day’s event on faceless thugs, a community source indicated the latest development prompted reprisals targeting the nearby Secretariat of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the area.

The source told Vanguard: “Who else would have destroyed the SDP office. All fingers point to PDP. They all boast that they will invoke Executive Orders 21 and 22 on the opposition and that they have disrupted the activities of the opposition. Today people got angry and also raided their local secretariat here. The impunity must end.”

The PDP and Rivers police had yet to respond to the development at the time of filing this report.
