No less than seven people were killed on Wednesday when a Mazda bus suddenly caught fire just meters before Odogbolu on the Sagamu-Benin highway.

Mr. Babatunde Akinbiyi, the spokesman for the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), confirmed the incident to reporters in Abeokuta.

Akinbiyi said seven others were injured in the accident which happened at 2:50 pm

According to him, the bus marked AGL 886 YD suddenly caught fire due to an engine flooding.

He said seven women died while seven others sustained injuries in the lone fatal crash

“According to an eyewitness account, the car was coming from the Kosofe area of ​​Lagos towards Epe for a church revival to ring in the new year when the engine suddenly caught fire.

“The number of passengers on the commercial bus was 15, seven of whom were burned to death and seven others were severely burned.

“However, the driver of the bus escaped,” he explained.

The TRACE spokesman said the injured victims have been taken to Ijebu Ode General Hospital for treatment.

He urged motorists to maintain and service their vehicles regularly before traveling.
