The newly appointed director-general (DG) of the Labor Party (LP) Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), Akin Osuntokun, revealed on Wednesday that former President Olusegun Obasanjo will “completely support” the 2023 campaign of LP presidential candidate Peter Obi. ” supports.
During an interview session on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Osuntokun made the above statement while answering a question about Obasanjo’s role in the Obi/Datti.
This comes barely 24 hours after the LP announced the former presidential aide as its new presidential campaign DG, following the resignation of Doyin Okupe, who was found guilty of violating money laundering law by a federal high court in Abuja on Dec. 19. of money.
Speaking of the former president’s close relationship with him and Okupe, Osuntokun said, “He’s a father figure. That’s a better description of the relationship. He is a father figure to us, not an ‘ally’. Assuming what you say is correct, am I not qualified for the job? Am I not fit for it?”
Asked if his nomination was based on the former president’s recommendation, Osuntokun said, “You’ll have to ask the presidential candidate, my director, if it was an Obasanjo slot and that’s how the position was filled.”
“Remember, I was the direct zonal coordinator of the Southwest campaign, so this is essentially a raise. It’s not that I just join the campaign organization, but if you say it’s Obasanjo’s slot, people have different perceptions and you can say that.”
The campaign DG argued that the focus should not be on who is behind his appointment, but on what he brings to the table.
“Forget who recommended me or if I’m filling in someone’s place. That’s no problem. It is my capacity and competence to do the work that matters most. If Obasanjo recommends a very capable person who will lead the party to victory, why should I have a problem with that. For me it’s a non-issue,” he said.
