New Liverpool striker Cody Gakpo has revealed the reason why he decided to join Premier League Club, Liverpool despite interest from Manchester United.
Gakpo was about to move to England last summer and Manchester United were closely associated with him.
However, Liverpool quickly switched to sign the Netherlands international before the January spell officially started.
“I think this is a great club for me to come in and try to show what I can do [do] and try to help the team realize even more great moments that they have already achieved in recent years.
“I think it’s also good for me personally to develop here and there are a lot of great players here [who] I can learn a lot from it,” Gakpo told Liverpool’s official website.
Gakpo also revealed that Van Dijk played a key role in his joining the team.
“When I was on the phone [in] with the coach he entered the coach’s office and then he saw me and we talked a bit. We talked a lot on the phone [in] the last days. What he told me was that this is the right step for me to make and for me to develop and become a better player.
“That the club is a very big and massive club, but also a real family – I think that is also very important for me, because I am a family man. He only said good things. I’m also glad he’s here so he can help me with some things. I am really grateful to be here.”
The Reds are paying up to £45 million for the 23-year-old, who scored three times at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
