Four police soldiers belonging to former Imo state governor Chief Ikedi Ohakim were killed by unknown gunmen on Monday night as he escaped by a hair’s breadth in an attack on his convoy.

A source said the incident took place in Oriagu, Ehime Mbano’s local government area, while the former governor was returning from a visit.

The source, who is close to the former governor, said the gunmen attempted to block the ex-governor’s convoy, but were beaten by the driver of the vehicle carrying Ohakim.

Angered that they had lost their target, they allegedly set fire to the vehicle carrying his four police soldiers, resulting in their deaths.

Gunmen attacked His Excellency’s convoy at Oriagu, Ehime Mbano tonight. He came back from a visit.

“They wanted to block his convoy, but the driver who was transporting him maneuvered and escaped. They set fire to the vehicle with its four police soldiers,” the source said.

It was believed that the former governor was terrified of the incident.

Attempts to reach him failed because calls on his line did not go through.

State Police Public Relations Officer CSP Michael Abattam had yet to comment on the incident at the time this report was filed.
