A statement from the Chief Press Secretary of the Oba Iguobaro Osaigbovo said: “This is to inform the general public that His Royal Highness, Edomwonyi Iduozee Ogiegbaen, has removed Enogie van Egbaen Siluko as Chief Coordinator of the Palace on Enigie Affairs in Benin Kingdom . His removal is effective immediately.”

While the statement gave no reasons for the removal, it is alleged that the removal may not be unrelated to a recent request for the state government to establish traditional councils for Edo South local government areas, a request many consider a plot to destroy Benin to balkanize. The letter signed by Ogiegnaen and another reads: “We, the Only One of the Local Government Areas of Edo South, who are recognized as Traditional Rulers in the Scheme by the Traditional Act of Rulers and Chiefs of the State of Bendel (1979), as applicable in Edo State, convey to Your Excellency our warmest congratulations and best wishes.

“We take this opportunity to request Your Excellency to exercise the privilege bestowed upon your exalted office by Part 7, Section 45 of the Traditional Law of Rulers and Chiefs, at this critical stage in the development of our dear State , to establish traditional councils for the local government areas of Oredo, Egor, Ikpoba Okha, Orhionmwon, Uhunmwonde, Ovia North East, Ovia South West or Edo State.

“In making the above request, we are aware of our duty to formulate general proposals, advice and guidance for our respective local government boards, and assist in the maintenance of law and order therein.

“Allow us to count on your demonstrated commitment to achieving greater heights in the management of public affairs in Edo State at this critical period when all hands should be on deck.”
