Error code PILUM is an error that CoD Modern Warfare and Warzone players may report when downloading additional content packs. The game does not recognize the packages and returns this error as a result. Most cases occur on Xbox and can be a bit confusing to deal with.

Fortunately, the gaming community tends to come up with solutions quickly. You can try different solutions and see if the problem goes away. Read on for all the details.

How to fix error code PILUM in CoD

When you download the game and try to launch it, you may be told that the system is missing some content packs. This happens regularly. What is not normal is trying to fetch them and then getting an error.

The strange thing is that error code PILUM is not included in Activision’s list of known issues. The packages are causing the problem and now you need to fix it.

There are three possible reasons for error code PILUM to occur.

  • A malfunction in the console
  • Inconsistent network information
  • Corrupted console caches and data

Since they are addressable, you only need to try some of these solutions. None of them are guaranteed to clear the error. However, community members have found them helpful.

Restart your Xbox

Sometimes restarting your Xbox is all it takes to fix the error code PILUM and possibly other issues. Press the Xbox button and select the restart option. After your console restarts, try again and see if the code still appears.

If the answer is yes, consider using the other tricks below.

Install the multiplayer package manually

If you’re playing CoD Modern Warfare, you’ll need to download the multiplayer pack to play with other players. It may be corrupted and needs to be replaced with functional files.

  1. Remove all content related to Modern Warfare.
  2. Go to the Settings menu.
  3. Select “Network Settings” under “General”.
  4. Under ‘Set up wireless network’, choose ‘Go offline’.
  5. Switch to your PC and download the multiplayer pack from the Microsoft Store using the same Microsoft account your Xbox uses.
  6. Go back to your Xbox and go back online.
  7. Go to the Microsoft Store and download the multiplayer pack on Xbox.
  8. Try running the game again.

This solution has helped many people regain full functionality. It should remove any remnants of corrupted game data.

Install all packages

Another workaround is managing your Modern Warfare add-ons and making sure the console installs them properly. If done correctly, the error code will disappear. You can then play Modern Warfare normally.

  1. Start up your Xbox console.
  2. Highlight Modern Warfare to see some options.
  3. Go to and select “Manage game and add-ons”.
  4. Select all desired data packs, including the Multiplayer & Special Ops pack.
  5. Save your changes and let everything install without interference.

Once all packages are installed, the PILUM error code should no longer appear.

Delete all partially downloaded content

Since the error prevents the console from installing the packages correctly, you can first remove them from the system and download them again. Here are the steps.

  1. Press the Guide button on your Xbox controller.
  2. Go to the “Settings” menu.
  3. Select “System” and “Storage”.
  4. Press X to bring up what the console suggests users delete.
  5. Scroll down and look for content with a yellow exclamation mark.
  6. Delete the content.

Here you download the packages again.

  1. This time go to “Account”.
  2. Choose ‘Payment & billing’.
  3. Select “Order History”.
  4. Choose the package you couldn’t download before.
  5. Download the content again.

With a new download, the error should no longer be triggered. This solution is relatively useful, but may not always work.

Download the multiplayer pack using a different method

This alternative method may be the key to fixing the error. You use the Microsoft Store for this process.

  1. Go to the Microsoft Store on your Xbox.
  2. Look for the Multiplayer Pack.
  3. Look for the list of the game’s cover art.
  4. Select the option to install it.
  5. Accept and install the multiplayer package.
  6. Try playing CoD Modern Warfare.

There’s not much to this process except waiting. That is why it is so easy to solve error code PILUM.

Clear the MAC address

Try clearing the MAC address to address any inconsistent net data. It is known to help resolve error code PILUM.

  1. Press the Guide button.
  2. Go to the “Settings” menu.
  3. Select ‘Network settings’.
  4. Tap “Advanced Settings” and “Alternate MAC Address”.
  5. Clear your current MAC address.
  6. Restart your Xbox console.
  7. See if error code PILUM still appears.

Doing this will usually bring your network data back to consistency. That way there is a lower margin of error.

Factory reset the Xbox Series X/S

Factory reset should be the last resort if none of the solutions above work. Back up your files before attempting a full factory reset. That way you can get your progress back after reinstalling everything.

  1. Press the Xbox button on your controller.
  2. Go to ‘Profile and system’.
  3. Under ‘System’, select ‘Console info’.
  4. Choose ‘Reset console’.
  5. Choose to keep your games and apps.
  6. Proceed with the factory reset.

If the factory reset doesn’t work, you may need to do another reset and delete all data. Doing so will clean your console but may also remove the PILUM error code.

Fix the error in Warzone it’s the same

All the above solutions work for Warzone as the two titles are part of the same game. Therefore, try each solution until you succeed.

Hopefully, Activision will fix this error and remove it from the game’s files. Getting everything working can be a challenge, especially when it comes to factory resets.

Are you on?

It’s frustrating to download a game only to get an error message without official developer support. Besides these solutions, there are not many things players can do. Until Activision works on the code, this error may appear from time to time.
